Located high on the bank of the Amur River, Khabarovsk is one of the oldest cities in the Amur region. It was founded in 1938.
Today, Khabarovsk is a major administrative, industrial, and cultural center of the Russian Far East. Its population is about 600.000 inhabitants. Khabarovsk is the seventh capital of Russia.
There are over 100 enterprises of different industries in Khabarovsk. Khabarovsk is a major traffic junction of rail, road, river, and air routs. There is a large railroad terminal, including 4 railroad stations and 3 depots. Rail traffic between Khabarovsk and Vladivostok was opened in 1897; Last section of the Trans-Siberian Railroad was finished in 1916. The last railroad link was completed after the commissioning of the unique railroad bridge spanning the Amur; this bridge was called the "Amur Wonder of the 20th century" and was compared with Eiffel’s tower of Paris.
Khabarovsk is a major air traffic terminal, serving both domestic and international flights. Khabarovsk Airport is servicing regular flights to Niigata, Seoul, Pyongyang, Harbin, Anchorage, and San Francisco and other countries. The number of international links is constantly increasing.
Khabarovsk is also a major scientific and cultural center with 9 Academic Institutes and branches of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 16 scientific research institutes, and over 10 institutions of higher education where students are trained in over 80 specialties.
There are several professional theaters, including Drama Theater, Musical Comedy Theater, Young Spectators' Theater, Triada Theater (Pantomime), White Theater, Puppet Theater and Circus. Very popular with the public is the Far Eastern Symphony Orchestra; there is a Concert Hall in the Philharmonic Society.
Khabarovsk climate is pleasant all year round with exception of hot and damp in the latter half of the summer and freezing days with biting winds in winter. Therefore only the strong-willed can survive here. But the middle of the autumn with its bright colors and transparent aromatic air is the most blessing time for poets and all other life lovers.
